How to enroll in Medicare online

Follow the steps to enroll in Medicare via SSA.gov

VISIT THE OFFICIAL SOCIAL SECURITY WEBSITE

Go to https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up

This page contains all the necessary resources and links to start your Medicare enrollment.

BEGIN THE MEDICARE APPLICATION PROCESS

Depending on your situation:

  • If you are not yet receiving Social Security Retirement income, click on "Apply Online" under the Sign Up for Medicare section.​

  • If you are already receiving Social Security Retirement income, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare and receive your Medicare card 4 months in advance.

SIGN IN OR CREATE A SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT LOGIN

To enroll in Medicare online, you must sign in to your My Social Security account.

If you do not have a login yet, follow the steps below:​​

If you HAVE an account:

  1. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount

  2. Click "Sign In to Your Account"

  3. Enter your username and password

  4. ​Start your Medicare application

If you DO NOT have an account:

  1. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount

  2. Click "Create an Account"

  3. Choose login option (Login.gov or ID.me)

  4. ​Create login.gov or ID.me account

  5. ​Agree to terms

  6. ​Access your SSA account and continue with your Medicare application

COMPLETE THE ONLINE MEDICARE APPLICATION

Once logged in:

  • Enter your personal information and verify your identity

  • Choose​whether you want Part A, Part B, or both

REVIEW AND SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

  • Carefully review all the information you've entered

  • Submit your application

  • Save or print your confirmation page and confirmation number

 

MONITOR YOUR APPLICATION STATUS

You can check the progress of you application by:

  • Logging into your My Social Security account

  • SSA may contact you by mail, phone, or email additional documentation

Be Aware of Fraud

A representative from the Social Security Administration will already have access to your confidential information and will therefore:

  • ​NEVER ask you for your Social Security number

  • NEVER ask you for your banking or credit card information

  • NEVER call about your "social security benefits"

  • NEVER call you about "suspicious activity" on your account

  • NEVER create a sense of panic or confusion

 

Verify the website is official:

  • Government websites will ALWAYS end in .gov​

  • Websites ending in .gov can only be utilized by official federal and state entities

  • Official information about Medicare can only be found on Medicare.gov (not .com, .net, etc.)

  • NEVER enter your information on a website unless you fully understand why they are asking for it

 

To report Social Security fraud:

  • By phone: Call the Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) fraud hotline at 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477). 

  • Online: Go to the SSA Office of the Inspector General's website and submit the online fraud reporting form. 

  • By mail: Send a written report to the OIG's office (details are on their website). 

If you are a victim of identity theft:

  • Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov to get a recovery plan and an FTC Identity Theft Report. 

  • Contact the companies where fraudulent accounts were opened to inform them about the identity theft.
